Abstract

A donor-centered view of declining recurring support and where durable growth might come from.

An international humanitarian nonprofit

The question

Why are recurring donors disengaging, and where can the organization build lasting relationships?

Context

An international humanitarian nonprofit saw its recurring donor program lose momentum. Campaign-level reporting showed activity but could not explain differences in giving histories, motivation, or channel preference. Leadership needed a framework for stewardship rather than another broad donor persona.

Our approach

Frame
Define the retention and growth decisions, donor groups to study, and what would count as an actionable segment.
Collect
Combine consented giving histories with donor interviews, survey responses, and message tests across channels.
Analyze
Model donor lifetime value as a range, cluster behavioral and motivational segments, and assess channel mix.
Validate
Compare segments across cohorts, test sensitivity to campaign effects, and check interpretations against donor voices.
Advise
Present stewardship priorities, message guidance, and a decision memo for testing channel investments.

Methods

Primary research
Donor interviews · Survey design · Message testing
Quantitative analysis
Donor segmentation · Lifetime value modeling · Cohort analysis
Validation
Holdout cohorts · Sensitivity analysis · Triangulation

What the client received

  • Donor segment profiles and stewardship priorities
  • Lifetime value framework with assumptions and ranges
  • Message-testing findings and channel mix options
  • Executive decision memo and model hand-off

Outcome

The team could distinguish relationships worth nurturing from short-lived campaign responses and prioritize outreach by donor need, channel fit, and uncertainty.
